Application: Refacing & Polishing

The Headley Bull Centre at the Australian National University, designed by awarded Lyons Architects, has an expansive central atrium featuring a two tone patterned polished concrete.

Commercial work of this size and design involves proven skills in project coordination. BGSB was appointed as the main concrete contractor managing all aspects of the foundation. This total project “pour to polish” approach is ideal for large scale projects, simplification and controlling quality.

In addition to the aesthetics of polishing a floor , design can be a major feature in large areas. The atrium flooring used of 370m of brass angle to frame white polished concrete against charcoal. The final effect helping to lead people through the space.

The charcoal concrete mix of 32mpa consisted of 7% black oxide with Bomballa Black aggregates. The off- white concrete was a special order and featured white Cowra stone aggregate. The final floor finish was not achieved through the use of sealers and products that create matt or gloss surfaces. BGSB achieved the final floor finish through a signature process using densifiers, hardeners and refined diamond polishing. This surface is highly advantageous requiring little maintenance in the future.
